CNN fact-checks Trump’s ISIS claim on screen

CNN put a fact-check on Donald Trump front and center Thursday with on-screen text as the network covered the GOP presidential nominee’s statement that President Obama “founded” the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“Trump calls Obama founder of ISIS (He’s not),” read the chyron at the bottom of the screen.

The text continued with: “Fact-check: al-Baghdadi founded ISIS.”

ISIS is currently led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. But according to the National Counterterrorism Center, it was established in 2004 by Jordanian al-Qaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. At the time, he pledged the group’s allegiance to Osama bin Laden.

Trump on Wednesday said Obama “founded” the terrorist group.

{mosads}“ISIS is honoring President Obama,” he said during a rally in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “He’s the founder of ISIS. He founded ISIS.”

“I would say the co-founder would be Crooked Hillary Clinton,” Trump added, referencing his Democratic rival for the White House.

He criticized Obama’s decision to withdraw U.S. military forces from the Middle East, saying the country “unleashed terrible fury all over the Middle East.”

Trump has made similar comments in the past, calling Clinton, a former secretary of State, the “founder of ISIS” and saying “she should get an award from them” last week.

This isn’t the first time CNN has fact-checked a Trump claim on-screen.

In June, the network showed text at the bottom of the screen saying another one of his claims was incorrect.

“Trump: I never said Japan should have nukes (He did),” the text read during the June broadcast.
