US weighing sanctions on Russia over Dem hacking: report
U.S. officials are discussing economic sanctions against Russia in response to cyberattacks on Democratic Party organizations, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Officials haven’t come to a decision on how to proceed, the Journal reported Thursday, and sanctions would require the White House to publicly accuse Russian hackers of the breach.
{mosads}U.S. officials did blame North Korea in December 2014 for a hack on Sony Pictures but the administration has generally shied away from publicly attributing specific cyberattacks.
It is widely believed that Russian-affiliated hackers were behind the cyberattacks on Democratic groups, including the Democratic National Committee, though Russia has denied responsibility.
The U.S. has previously levied sanctions against Russia over its moves in eastern Ukraine.
President Obama said earlier this month that if Russia were behind the widespread hack, it’d be on a “long list” of issues with the nation.
Obama appeared to echo the position of the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who said the U.S. was not ready to blame Russia for the hack.
Embarrassing emails from the DNC were released by WikiLeaks on the eve of the Democratic National Convention last month, prompting several officials to step down.
The FBI is reportedly investigating the incident, which appears to be more widespread than originally believed.
