AP deletes two-week-old Clinton tweet over omitted info
The Associated Press on Thursday said it will delete and replace a two-week-old tweet about Hillary Clinton’s donors because it “fell short of AP standards.”
{mosads}AP’s Vice President of Standards John Daniszewski wrote that the tweet, which was meant to direct the readers to an article about Clinton’s frequent meetings with the Clinton Foundation donors, was accused of being misleading by “omitting essential context.”
“The tweet sent on Aug. 23 was the subject of criticism from supporters of Clinton, a number of people in the media and others who said it gave a distorted picture of the secretary’s meetings and was not backed up by the AP’s own reporting,” he said.
The original tweet read: “BREAKING: AP analysis: More than half those who met Clinton as Cabinet secretary gave money to Clinton Foundation.”
The day after the tweet ran, Hillary Clinton’s campaign called on the AP to modify or delete it.
“That seems pretty egregious to knowingly allow a falsehood to remain posted under AP’s banner,” Brian Fallon, press secretary for the Clinton campaign, said at the time.
The tweet was criticized by many in the media as well, including Washington Post media reporter Erik Wemple, who called it “tendentious and misleading.”
Daniszewski wrote that the new tweet will state: “AP review: Many of the discretionary meetings Clinton had at State were with people who gave to Clinton Foundation.”
AP also said that a new internal review policy will apply to all their tweets, and any deleted content on Twitter will be accompanied by a separate explanation for the removal.
“Unpacking how we fell short of our own standards is a painful process, but a necessary one. The new guidelines are stronger as a result,” said AP executive director Kathleen Carroll.
Daniszewski added that the news agency will also delete an Aug. 27 tweet about the Republican nominee that “seemed to equate the responses of Donald Trump and NBA star Dwyane Wade to the tragic slaying of Wade’s cousin, Nykea Aldridge.”
