Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus on Tuesday called Donald Trump “a role model” at the same time some Republicans shied away from making such declarations.
“I think everyone’s a role model in different ways,” Priebus told Bret Baier on Fox News’s “Special Report,” adding, “I think he is a role model.”
“When you look at someone who has built businesses, lost businesses, come back, lived the American dream, a person who sets goals, is a winner – I think he is a role model,” Priebus said.
Democrats have slammed Republicans over the question after Sen. Kelly Ayotte, a vulnerable GOP senator running for reelection in New Hampshire, said in a debate on Monday night that she would
“absolutely” call the controversial businessman a role model for children. But her opponent bashed her for her remark, given that she has not fully endorsed the GOP nominee.
Ayotte attempted to walk back her remark after the debate, saying “neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton have set a good example and I wouldn’t hold up either of them as role models for my kids.”
But Democrats seized on her initial answer, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Tuesday
tweeting that Trump has called “Latinos rapists, African Americans thugs, & women fat pigs.”
Sen. Pat Toomey (Pa.), another Republican running for reelection this year,
told reporters after a campaign stop Tuesday that he doesn’t consider Trump a role model for his children.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest
said President Obama also doesn’t see Trump as a role model.
