Hundreds of Secret Service agents are not receiving overtime pay due to a federal salary cap, BuzzFeed News reported Wednesday

{mosads}According to the report, many of the agents reached a salary threshold of $160,300 in both regular salary and overtime pay in the spring, so they are not being paid for overtime work.

Faron Paramore, assistant director for government and public affairs at the Secret Service, told BuzzFeed that a third of its agents will exceed the salary cap.

BuzzFeed cited a hiring freeze and an election year that requires protection for both major-party nominees in addition to President Obama and Vice President Biden as reasons for the agency’s limited funds.

Attempts to raise the salary limit for Secret Service employees to $170,000 through legislation in Congress have so far not been successful.

The news comes amid the Obama administration’s effort to guarantee overtime pay to millions more workers. A new regulation, announced in May, would allow any employee making up to $47,476 to qualify for overtime pay.
