Ryan’s defeated primary challenger to run for Speaker
Paul Nehlen isn’t done challenging Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).
{mosads}Nehlen, who badly lost a primary challenge to Ryan over the summer, on Tuesday said he will mount a campaign to challenge Ryan for the Speaker’s gavel, according to CNN.
The Constitution does not explicitly say that the Speaker must be a member of the House. Nehlen, a businessman from Ryan’s hometown of Janesville, Wis., said he’s mounting the long-shot bid in response to Ryan “backstabbing” GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
“We are going to make it uncomfortable for House members who say we have no confidence in Speaker Ryan” but vote for him anyway, Nehlen told CNN.
Ryan has angered some in his own party over his tepid support of Trump.
In the wake of a 2005 recording being released earlier this month that included Trump talking about groping women without their permission, Ryan announced that he would no longer defend or campaign for the nominee, though he did not withdraw his support.
And during the Ryan’s primary campaign, Trump withheld his endorsement of Ryan for weeks and even flirted with the possibility of backing Nehlen before eventually backing the Speaker. It was payback after Ryan declined to endorse Trump for a month.
That said, Nehlen likely has no shot of being elected as Speaker, and his announcement seemed to be more about extending his 15 minutes in the spotlight.
