Clinton to give commencement speech at Brooklyn college
Hillary Clinton will give Medgar Evers College’s 2017 commencement address, the college’s president announced this week.
The announcement of her speech marks the second year in a row a first lady has spoken to the graduating class of the City University of New York.
Former first lady Michelle Obama gave her final commencement speech at the university last year, while Clinton has visited the Medgar Evers College in the past.
Rudolph F. Crew, the president of Medgar Evers, told The New York Times in an interview that Clinton’s address comes at a critical time in higher education.
{mosads}“I could not think of a better match for a graduation speaker given that so many things that she has talked about are incredibly important to the student population — affordability, tuition, being able to avoid these ridiculous conversations about immigration,” Crew said. “I want our students to see strong women who are capable of being able to lead.”
Medgar Evers has a large population of first-generation college graduates and low-income students, according to the Times report.
Clinton is giving her speech June 8, two weeks after addressing graduates during another speech at her alma mater, Wellesley College, the Times reported.
