Putin: Proposed US sanctions targeting Russia result from US politics

Russian President Vladimir Putin says new U.S. sanctions aimed at his country are a direct result of partisan feuding in the U.S.

The Russian leader made the comments on Thursday at his annual Q&A session with the Russian people.

Putin also said the U.S. government’s sanctions against Russia have always been aimed at containing Moscow.

{mosads}His comments come a day after the Senate voted 97-2 for new sanctions aimed at punishing Russia for meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The implementation of new sanctions forces President Trump to obtain congressional approval before lifting any existing sanctions of Russia.

The Kremlin has denied meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
