Lobbyist shot at congressional baseball practice released from the hospital

The lobbyist wounded during the shooting at a congressional GOP baseball practice last week has been released from the hospital.

“Our family is pleased to report that Matt has been discharged from George Washington University Hospital,” Matt Mika’s family said in a statement Friday. 

“We are truly grateful for the compassionate, world-class care provided by the doctors, nurses and team at George Washington, and we will never forget and continue to be grateful for the heroism shown by the U.S. Capitol Police,” the statement continued.

“We truly appreciate the prayers, words of encouragement and support from Matt’s friends, family and people across the nation and the world. Matt’s discharge is a welcome and important step,” it added. 

Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, had multiple surgeries after being shot, and suffered injuries to his sternum and lungs, as well as broken ribs.

The hospital tweeted a photo on Friday showing Washington Nationals baseball player Jayson Werth meeting with Mika at the hospital.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is also making progress after also being critically wounded during the shooting in suburban Washington.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center announced Friday that Scalise had been moved out of the intensive care unit after his condition was upgraded to “fair.”

Scalise and Mika were wounded when a gunman identified as James Hodgkinson opened fire on a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., where the GOP congressional baseball team was practicing. Hodgkinson later died following a shootout with police.
