Trump told senators GOP would look like ‘dopes’ if they didn’t pass ObamaCare repeal: report
President Trump told Republican senators at a dinner Monday night that the lawmakers would look like “dopes” if they didn’t pass an ObamaCare repeal bill, Politico reported.
“If the Republicans have the House, Senate and the presidency and they can’t pass this health care bill they are going to look weak,” Trump reportedly said. “How can we not do this after promising it for years?”
{mosads}The dinner came shortly before the Senate GOP’s ObamaCare replacement plan fell apart when Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Jerry Morgan (R-Kan.) became the third and fourth Republicans to oppose it, sinking its ability to pass the Senate.
Trump quickly called on Republicans to repeal ObamaCare immediately and figure out a replacement plan later, a path Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced he would take.
“Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now & work on a new Healthcare Plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!” Trump tweeted.
Repealing portions of ObamaCare without enacting a replacement could leave 18 million people without health insurance the following year, according to a report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
After the elimination of ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion and insurance subsidies, 27 million people would lose insurance, growing to 32 million by 2026, the CBO found.
