Limbaugh: Sotomayor might be secretly pro-life

Rush Limbaugh suggested today that he might support Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination. Sotomayor’s Catholic faith, Limbaugh said, might tilt her towards pro-life rulings.

“Sotomayor, she’s a Catholic and she doesn’t have a clear record on abortion,” Limbaugh said on his program today. “Overturning Roe v. Wade, wow, it would be huge.”

Limbaugh, who has previously called Sotomayor a “reverse racist,” went on to say that he might actually support her confirmation.

“I can see a possibility of supporting this nomination if I can be convinced that she does have a sensibility toward life in a legal sense, of course in a real sense,” Limbaugh said.

Tom Goldstein of SCOTUSblog reviewed Sotomayor’s decisions relating to abortion and concluded that they “show a level of balance that indicates that her decisionmaking is not driven by pro-choice or pro-life views.”

But Sotomayor has never participated in a ruling that directly addresses the legal foundation of Roe v. Wade, a fact that has some pro-choice activists nervous.
