Leahy: No SCOTUS hearings in June

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said Tuesday that the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor will not take place until July, MSNBC reported.

Leahy will meet with Judiciary ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) on Wednesday to discuss scheduling the hearings, according to MSNBC.

President Obama has said he would like Sotomayor to be confirmed by the Senate before Congress breaks for the August recess.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Sotomayor on Tuesday, Leahy also addressed the criticism Sotomayor has faced over a speech in which she appear to indicate that her upbringing may play a role in her jurisprudence.

Leahy said Sotomayor told her that is not the case and as a judge she “ultimately and completely” follows the law.
