Trump-Russia pundit mulling run for Illinois attorney general

A former federal prosecutor known for his commentary on the ongoing federal probe into ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia says he is mulling a bid for Illinois attorney general.

“It’s something that I’ve been thinking about and considering very carefully,” Renato Mariotti, who is a Democrat, told Politico in an interview published Thursday. 

“I’m trying to come up with a decision on [it] in the next week or two,” he added. 

{mosads}Mariotti’s comments come after the current Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D) announced she would not be seeking reelection after four terms. 

The former federal prosecutor has become a prominent commentator on the ongoing federal Russia probe, garnering more than 43,000 Twitter followers.

Mariotti told The Chicago Tribune while he is critical of the White House’s role in the investigation, he strives to be a voice of reason in the continuing debate. 

“I think I’m a reality check,” he said.

“Robert Mueller isn’t going to wave a magic wand and change America for them,” he said, adding, “I would love to be on Mueller’s team. I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t crossed my mind!”
