Gretchen Carlson on Moore allegations: We’ve reached a political ‘abyss’

Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson said Friday that Republicans who continue to support Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore are indicative of the “abyss” that American politics has reached.

In an interview with “Bold TV,” Carlson called it “disheartening” to hear comments from Moore supporters such as Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) who say they still plan to vote for Moore despite accusations that he initiated sexual contact with teenage girls as young as 14 years old. Moore has denied the allegations.

“It’s very disheartening to me that people on either side would say that even if all allegations were proven to 150 percent, that they’d still vote for a child predator,” Carlson said. “That’s sad.”

“It’s more important that the other person doesn’t get in to office so we’re going to not recognize that someone may have been a child molester,” she added. “That’s crazy in 2017, that we’re in that kind of an abyss of political divide.”

Bold TV host and former “American Idol” star Clay Aiken asked Carlson if voters are the ultimate judges in such cases. Carlson said President Trump’s election last year proved they are.

“They do, they do get to decide,” Carlson responded. “And I get that question every day, you know, how could President Trump have these allegations against him and yet, nothing happens as a result but we’re watching these big, huge private company titans fall, and that’s my answer, right?”

Carlson previously referenced allegations of sexual misconduct against Trump on Thursday night after Trump went after Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) on Twitter over allegations from a radio host and former sports broadcaster who said this week that Franken kissed and groped her without her consent in 2006.

“What about yours?” Carlson tweeted in response to Trump.

“I can’t repeat this enough: sexual harassment is apolitical. Democrat, Republican, Socialist, independent… your party doesn’t make you perfect,” she tweeted later.

Carlson left Fox News in 2016 after accusing then-CEO Roger Ailes of sexual harassment. She is currently on a cross-country book tour for her memoir, “Be Fierce,” which details her story and her “playbook” for combating sexual harassment and assault in the workplace.
