VIDEO: Foxx says Shepard murder not due to homophobia

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) said yesterday that the murder of Matthew Shepard had nothing to do with his homosexuality and instead was part of a simple robbery attempt.

Speaking against a hate crimes bill named after Shepard, who was brutally tortured and killed in 1998, Foxx said the murder was not motivated by homophobia.

“That young man was killed in the commitment of a robbery,” Foxx said on the floor of the House. “It wasn’t because he was gay. The bill was named for him, the hate crimes bill was named for him, but it’s really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills.
