Heritage Act will ‘key vote’ Senate GOP tax overhaul

Heritage Action, an influential conservative group, is throwing its support behind Senate Republicans’ sweeping tax reform legislation, urging lawmakers to vote for the overhaul.

The group said in a statement that it would “key vote” in favor of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which is expected to come to a vote in the Senate Friday night.

Republicans have billed the legislation as a tax cut that would reduce the burden middle-class families. It would also slash the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, which GOP lawmakers argue will bolster economic growth.

Democrats, however, argue that the measure will balloon the deficit and serve as a massive windfall to the wealthiest Americans.

“The Senate GOP tax reform bill would unleash economic growth, increase wages for American workers, create new jobs, and provide tax relief to all Americans including the middle and working classes, main street businesses, and U.S. corporations,” Heritage Action said.

In the hours before the vote, Senate Republicans were still offering last-minute changes to the nearly 500-page bill.

Senate Republican leaders announced Friday that they believe they have the votes needed to pass the sweeping tax overhaul. No Democrats are expected to vote for it.
