Steve Schmidt, a GOP strategist and frequent critic of President Trump, blasted Trump for his tweet aimed at Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), calling it an “assault on the dignity and the majesty” of the presidency.
“It bears mentioning just for a moment how abnormal this is,” Schmidt said on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House” on Tuesday. “The assault, the constant assault on the dignity and the majesty of the office of the president of the United States.”
Schmidt added that Trump’s tweet was an example of “the constant degrading of his office.”
Trump attacked Gillibrand on Twitter Tuesday, just one day after she called for him to resign from the presidency because of the sexual misconduct allegations leveled against him by multiple women.
{mosads}He also referenced Gillibrand’s statement earlier this month that former President Clinton should have resigned from office, calling her “very disloyal” to Clinton.
“Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office ‘begging’ for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump,” Trump tweeted. “Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!”
Gillibrand quickly fired back at Trump, saying “you cannot silence me.”
Other Democrats blasted Trump for the tweet, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who accused Trump of trying to “bully, intimidate and slut-shame” Gillibrand.
Gillibrand, who is seen as a potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, has been a voice against sexual harassment for years, and made a name for herself in the Senate by pushing for reforms to how the military handles sexual misconduct cases.
