Florida shooting victim to get honorary acceptance into West Point

A 15-year-old Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) member and high school student who was killed in Wednesday’s shooting in Parkland, Fla., will receive an honorary acceptance letter to West Point, according to reports on social media.

Peter Wang, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student who died while helping his fellow students escape, was made an honorary member of the military academy’s class of 2025 and was given honorarium tokens on Tuesday, according to The Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Wang, who died in his JROTC uniform, was one of 17 killed in last week’s mass shooting. At least a dozen others were injured after a 19-year-old former student allegedly attacked the school.

West Point’s honorary acceptance of Wang comes after the high schooler was honored in a White House petition over the weekend calling for the JROTC member to receive a a full-honors military burial. His funeral is today.

“His selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area,” a petition on WhiteHouse.gov reads. “Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial.”

Students at Wang’s school have responded to the shooting with a national call for gun control and by announcing a march on Washington, D.C.

President Trump met with victims and first responders of the shooting over the weekend.
