Two killed in shooting at Central Michigan University

Two people were killed Friday after a gunman opened fire on the campus of Central Michigan University, the school said.

The two people killed were the shooter’s parents, according to the Detroit Free Press. CMU Police Lt. Larry Klaus declined to confirm the victims’ identities in a news conference Friday.

The two people killed were not students, and no additional injuries were reported, according to the university. The shooting is believed to have stemmed from a “domestic situation.” Students were under orders to shelter in place.

Authorities in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., where the school is located, were searching for a suspect they identified as 19-year-old James Eric Davis Jr., who is still at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting took place in Campbell Hall, a dormitory at CMU, the school said. 

UPDATE 10:23 a.m.: The suspect is a 19-year-old black male who is approx. 5 foot 9 inches tall. He is wearing mustard yellow jeans and a blue hoodie. He may have taken off the blue hoodie. He is considered armed & dangerous. If you see the suspect, do not approach him. Call 911.

CM Life, the university’s student newspaper, reported that the suspected shooter is still believed to be on the school’s premises.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) said he has been in contact with Michigan State Police about the shooting, and that his priority is ensuring that students on the Central Michigan campus are safe.

“I am in constant contact with @MichStatePolice as they work w/local law enforcement to determine what has occurred at Central Michigan University,” he tweeted. “The priority right now is the safety of those still on campus and I thank all first responders involved for their swift action.”

The shooting comes a little more than two weeks after a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. That attack left 17 people dead and 14 others injured.

In the days and weeks after the Parkland shooting, lawmakers have faced increased pressure to strengthen gun laws and harden security on school campuses.
