Majority doesn’t trust Trump administration to stop foreign meddling in midterms: poll

A majority of Americans in a new poll don’t believe President Trump will stop foreign governments from meddling in the 2018 midterm elections.

Fifty-five percent of all adults in the Axios survey don’t have much or any trust that the Trump administration can prevent interference.

Eighty-six percent of Democrats said they don’t trust Trump to stop foreign governments, while only 17 percent of Republicans said the same thing.

{mosads}Sixty-six percent of Americans also said that tech companies have a “major responsibility” to prevent meddling in the elections, Axios reported, but less than 50 percent said they trust the companies to do so.

Eighty percent blamed the tech companies for not doing enough to prevent meddling in the 2016 elections, according to the poll.

The online poll of 3,574 adults, which was conducted from Feb. 21-23, has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

The survey follows a recent USA Today poll found that more Americans trust special counsel Robert Mueller than Trump when it comes to the investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 elections.

That poll also found that three-fourths of respondents think Russia will try to influence future American elections but only 60 percent said Trump is doing enough to address the threat of future influence.

U.S. Cyber Command chief Adm. Michael Rogers told lawmakers last week that he has yet to receive authority from Trump to disrupt Russia’s election interference.
