Former Presidents Obama and Clinton attended the service in Houston with former first ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton. They joined members of the Bush family, including former Presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush.
Noticeably absent from the group was President Trump, who said Saturday that he would watch the funeral services from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla.
{mosads} It’s not uncommon for sitting presidents not to attend the funerals of former first ladies.
The White House said the president would skip the funeral “to avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush Family and friends attending the service.”
Melania Trump brought two White House staff members who were close to the Bush family as her guests to the funeral.
Trump was accompanied by former White House head maitre d’ George Hainey and current White House usher Buddy Carter, the first lady’s office said.
Barbara Bush died Tuesday night at age 92.
