Parkland father rips newspaper for placing gun ad under gun violence stories

The father of one of the students killed during the Parkland, Fla., school shooting tore into the Sun Sentinel newspaper on Wednesday for placing a gun advertisement under stories about gun violence.

Fred Guttenberg’s 14-year-old daughter, Jamie, was one of the 17 people killed by a gunman inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. 

“Looks like the Sun Sentinel editor on this page failed,” Guttenberg tweeted. “A story on the victims of gun violence and they put a gun coupon on the page. WTF!!!”

There were two stories on Wednesday’s front page dedicated to victims of gun violence, including one on the $8.2 million in donations following the Parkland shooting.

{mosads}The main photo honors Alyssa Alhadeff, another Parkland victim, who would have turned 15 on Tuesday.

At the bottom, there is a dollar-off admission coupon to the Fort Lauderdale Gun Show.

The newspaper also features the article regarding Esteban Santiago, a military veteran who confessed to shooting five people and injuring six more at Fort Lauderdale’s international airport last January.

Prosecutors have decided not to seek the death penalty and Santiago will serve life in prison, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Guttenberg has become a vocal gun control advocate in the weeks following the deadly school shooting.

In an interview with The Miami New Times last week, the father said he was pushing for common sense reform despite massive pushback from the National Rifle Association and Second Amendment advocates.

“My daughter died running down a hallway from a gunman,” he says. “The last few minutes of her life, that’s how they were. That’s fear. Somebody typing shit to me online? I don’t care. I’ll never have the fear that my daughter had, so in a weird way, I’ve lost the ability to have fear.”

On Monday, another father of a Parkland victim filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the school resource officer who stayed outside during the attack.

Dan Daley, a Stoneman Douglas alumnus who is running for reelection as the Coral Spring City Commissioner, said the newspaper was guilty of “pretty insensitive placement.”

“Make up for it by not accepting those ads any longer,” Daley said on Twitter on Wednesday.
