NYPD union blasts city agency as ‘disgrace’ for tweet about Fourth Amendment

A top union for the New York Police Department (NYPD) lashed out at the city agency that investigates police misconduct on Saturday, calling it a “disgrace,” after it tweeted about the Fourth Amendment.

The Twitter account for the Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA), a group composed of roughly 13,000 active and retired NYPD sergeants, tweeted that the city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) has “no clue what a NYPD officer does,” and accused the board of targeting SBA and disparaging its integrity.

“You are all a disgrace,” the account tweeted. “You sit on your ass and target the NYPD all while growing up on the nipple of what’s easy. You have no clue what a NYPD officer does yet target us and disparage our integrity. One day you will dial 911 when evil is at your door and thank god for the NYPD.”

The association was responding to a Friday tweet from the CCRB that was commemorating May 4, the unofficial holiday celebrating the “Star Wars” series and its “may the force be with you” tagline.

CCRB posted a photo of staff members on Friday, reminding citizens to report potential instances of police misconduct.

“#MayTheFourth Amendment protect you from unreasonable searches and seizures. And if you feel your rights have been violated by an NYPD officer, file a complaint here.”

The Hill has reached out to the CCRB and Mayor Bill de Blasio for comment. NYPD deferred comment to the mayor’s office.

Alex Vitale, coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College, condemned the SBA’s use of “hate speech” on Saturday.

“More toxic #ThinBlueLine hate speech from NY’s Finest,” Vitale tweeted. “And these are the supervisors. Can this really be “reformed”? #TheEndOfPolicing.”

No lawmakers or politicians have released any public statements regarding the tweet.
