Manafort to appeal judge’s jail order: report

Attorneys for President Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort said on Monday that they are planning to appeal a judge’s order to jail Manafort, according to Reuters.

The development comes after U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson revoked Manafort’s bail and ordered him to go jail earlier this month after special counsel Robert Mueller filed a superseding indictment, accusing him of tampering with the testimonies of two witnesses involved in the case.

Manafort pleaded not guilty to both of the obstruction of justice charges brought earlier this month.

Prosecutors argued that Manafort could continue to engage in criminal activity if he is not jailed.

Prosecutors have raised concerns in the past about Manafort’s behavior during his house arrest. In December, they claimed that Manafort violated a gag order by helping to author an op-ed in a Ukrainian newspaper defending his work in the country.

The former campaign chairman is currently being held at Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Va.

He is currently facing a number of charges in Mueller’s probe, including tax evasion, bank fraud, money laundering and failing to register as a foreign agent with the Justice Department for his work on behalf of former Ukranian President Viktor Yanukovych and the Ukrainian government.

President Trump has sought to distance himself from Manafort, saying that he only worked on his presidential campaign “for a very short period of time.”

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to the numerous charges and faces a trial date in Washington in September.
