Pittsburgh firefighter suspended over racist remarks about police shooting protesters
A Pittsburgh firefighter was suspended last weekend after making racist comments in reference to the police shooting death of unarmed black teen Antwon Rose Jr.
The Freeport Volunteer Fire Department announced the suspension of Christopher James Negley on Saturday after racist remarks were brought to the department’s attention on Thursday.
“The views expressed in a member’s private post earlier today do not represent the views of the department, or its members. A full detailed investigation is being conducted at this time,” fire department officials wrote in a Facebook post.

Negley was suspended for using a racial slur to refer to the hundreds of people protesting Rose’s death and calling for criminal charges against East Pittsburgh officer Michael Rosfeld, who was charged with criminal homicide on Wednesday.
In the post, the volunteer firefighter used a racial slur and suggested that those protesting had time to do so because they were unemployed.
“The trustees and officers of Freeport VFD after deliberating have suspended Christopher Negley indefinitely until the investigation can be completed. We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter,” the department said to the public on Saturday, according to Triblive.
“We are indirectly involved,” Fire Chief Steve Warheit was quoted saying of the incident by the local publication, adding “by no means do we condone” the posts Negley shared.
