Cindy McCain tweets after husband’s funeral: ‘Together we go on’

Cindy McCain on Saturday shared a photo and short message of mourning on Twitter following her husband’s funeral in Washington, D.C.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who died last week at age 81, was eulogized Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral.

“Today we lost our hero, our friend, our mentor, our father, our grandfather and our husband,” she tweeted. “Together we mourn and together we go on.”

The late senator, who was hailed by many as a “maverick” and “hero,” was widely respected across political parties.

President Trump, with whom McCain had a contentious relationship, was not invited to the service. His daughter, Ivanka Trump, and husband Jared Kushner were in attendance, as well as multiple other Trump Cabinet members.

The senator’s daughter, Meghan McCain, also delivered a powerful eulogy in which she took multiple swipes at Trump, blasting “cheap rhetoric” and taking aim at his 2016 campaign slogan.

“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,” she said.

McCain will be buried in a private ceremony Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
