Video of Ayanna Pressley reacting to her upset victory in Massachusetts goes viral
Ayanna Pressley’s reaction to her historic upset victory in a Democratic primary for a Massachusetts House seat quickly went viral on Tuesday.
Video posted on Twitter by Jesse Mermell shows Pressley, a Boston City councilor, trying to gather her emotions as results show she beat incumbent Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Mass.).
{mosads}”We won, we won,” Pressley says, as she is hugged by many of the people around her. “Oh my God.”
The video, which was posted just moments after The Associated Press called the race for Massachusetts’s 7th Congressional District, had accumulated about 555,000 views on Twitter as of Wednesday morning.

“We did everything we could do to get this done,” Capuano said Tuesday night, according to WBZ NewsRadio in Boston. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out … but this is life. Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman.”
Capuano is now the fourth incumbent to fall in a primary election this year, joining Republican Reps. Robert Pittenger (N.C.) and Mark Sanford (S.C.) and Democratic Rep. Joseph Crowley (N.Y.).
Pressley will vie for a seat in the House of Representatives after a career on Boston’s City Council. She became the first woman of color ever to serve on the city’s council in 2010.
She will likely become the first African-American from Massachusetts elected to Congress this November, as there are no GOP lawmakers running in her district.
