More than 1,000 people are still missing a week after Hurricane Michael made landfall in the Florida Panhandle, according an official who spoke to Reuters.

Matthew Marchetti, co-founder of CrowdSource Rescue organization, told the news service that hundreds of volunteers were still searching for more than 1,135 people in Florida who have not contacted friends and family.

{mosads}Marchetti said that most who are missing are from Panama City, adding that many of them are elderly, have a disability, are poor or live alone, according to Reuters.

Marchetti also said that the search for the missing people has been slowed by poor cellphone reception in the affected areas.

Reuters reported that Florida officials have not provided a number for how many people are missing following the hurricane, noting that those missing might be with friends or family and are not presumed dead.

Hurricane Michael was one of the most devastating storms to hit the southeastern U.S.

The hurricane last week pummeled several states, including Georgia, Florida and North Carolina, killing at least 27 people. The storm came just a few weeks after Hurricane Florence killed more than 40 people in the Carolinas and Virginia.
