President Trump on Monday endorsed House candidate Denver Riggleman (R), saying he was a “big help” with tax cuts, even though Riggleman was not in Congress last year when Republicans passed their tax overhaul legislation.
“@Denver4VA of the 5th District in Virginia is a popular guy who really knows how to get the job done!” Trump tweeted late Monday night while issuing a variety of endorsements. “Really big help with Tax Cuts, the Military and our great Vets. He has my Total Endorsement!”
New York Magazine noted that Trump initially referred to Riggleman as “congressman” in a since-deleted tweet.
{mosads}The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how Riggleman has helped with tax cuts.
Riggleman is vying to replace Rep. Tom Garrett (R) and hold the seat that represents Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. He is locked in a tight race with Democrat Leslie Cockburn.
The Cook Political Report rates the race as “lean Republican.”
Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act into law in December 2017. He has repeatedly hailed the tax cuts at campaign rallies for GOP candidates ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm elections.
