Eiffel Tower goes dark in honor of Strasbourg victims

Paris’s Eiffel Tower went dark Wednesday night in honor of the four victims of a Christmas market shooting in the French city of Strasbourg on Tuesday.

Video recorded by The Associated Press showed the tower darkening Tuesday evening, a day after three people were killed in a shooting at the world-famous Strasbourg Christmas market, and as French authorities continued a manhunt for the suspected gunman.

The BBC reported that French and German authorities remained on the hunt Wednesday night for Chérif Chekatt, 29, whom French police say was possibly influenced by radical Islamic teachings.{mosads}

According to reports, the suspect reportedly fled the scene Tuesday in a taxi, boasting of the crimes, while apparently nursing an injury sustained by soldiers who returned fire and wounded him during the shooting.

Four family members have been detained related to the investigation, according to the BBC, which also reported that Chekatt has 27 previous convictions across Europe for crimes including robbery, and has spent considerable time in prison where it is thought he was radicalized.

A spokesperson for the State Department told NBC News that the U.S. condemns “in the strongest terms this horrific attack” and that “our thoughts are with the family and friends of those affected.”
