GOP candidate who drove ‘deportation bus’ reports to jail following indictment

Michael Williams, the Republican Georgia state senator and former gubernatorial candidate, reported to jail on Wednesday following his indictment on insurance fraud charges.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Williams, who rose to prominence after he ran a “Deportation Bus Tour” to the state’s “sanctuary cities,” reported to Hall County jail Wednesday afternoon. 

{mosads}Williams was indicted on charges of making a false report of insurance fraud, making false statements and falsely reporting a crime last week.

Williams’s lawyer A.J. Richman told the Journal-Constitution that he negotiated bond with the district attorney, adding that Williams would be “out soon.”

“Senator Williams looks forward to his day in court, and I will vigorously defend him,” Richman said.

Williams is accused of filing a false insurance claim related to the alleged theft of $300,000 worth of computer servers from his campaign office. He is also accused of falsely reporting the alleged crime to law enforcement.

Williams, a former co-chairman of President Trump’s presidential campaign in Georgia, gained national prominence for his “Deportation Bus” earlier this year, which he said he would use to find and house undocumented immigrants “to send them back to where they came from.”

“We’re not just going to track them and watch them roam around our state,” Williams said in the commercial at the time. “We’re going to put them on this bus and send ‘em home.”

His term is set to expire next month, when he will be replaced by Republican Greg Dolezal.
