New York City set to get Wu-Tang Clan district

The New York City Council unanimously voted to name a street after the renowned hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.

According to NPR News, the council voted 48-0 during its final meeting of the year last week to co-name the street and several more after the group and other notable musical acts and legendary offspring of the city, such as Notorious B.I.G. (born Christopher Wallace), Woody Guthrie and poet Audre Lorde.

{mosads}As part of move, which is pending a final sign-off from New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), an intersection in Staten Island, which is the hometown of Wu-Tang Clan, would be called Wu-Tang Clan District and a Brooklyn block in BedStuy where Wallace grew up would be renamed Christopher Wallace Way.

Local-culture advocate LeRoy McCarthy, who led the Wu-Tang and B.I.G. effort, told NPR he felt the recognition was long overdue. 

“There’s a certain sense of dismissal for hip hop historically … they think it’s not worthy of being recognized of the recognition that you would give to classical music or jazz or rock and roll,” McCarthy said. “Hip-hop deserves that respect.”

The move comes several years after de Blasio renamed a part of Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx “Hip Hop Boulevard.”

The move to rename the avenue came in recognition of famed DJ Kool Herc, who threw a party at on the avenue in 1973 where many hip hop historians believe the hip hop genre was born, according to XXL.
