$30K raised in GoFundMe to give free tacos to LA teachers on strike

A GoFundMe fundraising effort called “Tacos for Teachers” has raised nearly $30,000 to send taco trucks to the picket lines at schools in Los Angles to feed teachers who are striking following months of failed negotiations over class sizes, pay raises and school staffing.

The International Socialist Organization and Democratic Socialists of America organized the effort that has so far exceeded its $15,000 goal with $28,860 raised in the past 12 days as of Wednesday afternoon.

{mosads}According to CNN, the effort aims to feed nearly 38,000 teachers and staff members that are striking.

Clare Lemlich, the organizer behind the campaign, on the GoFundMe page that the effort aims to “help support striking Los Angeles teachers and their fight for public education.”

Lemlich wrote any remaining funds not used on the tacos will be directly transferred to Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, an advocacy group based in Los Angeles that fights “to reclaim the promise of public education as our nation’s gateway to a strong democracy and racial and economic justice,” according to its website.

Lemlich also told CNN that the effort will continue for as long as the strike goes on.

The report comes several days after thousands of public school teachers in Los Angeles began to strike for the first time in 30 years over pay raises, class sizes among other issues.
