Swastika found drawn on crib’s mattress at Florida hotel

A New York family found two swastikas drawn on the mattress of a baby’s crib they requested at a hotel in South Florida.

Zipora Waltner, an Orthodox Jewish mother, was staying with her husband and children at the Grand Beach Hotel in Surfside, Fla., near Miami Beach, WSVN 7News reported Monday.

“We requested a crib brought up to our room for my baby, and on the mattress there were two symbols, swastika symbols, drawn on the mattress,” Waltner said. “I was certain it was a swastika and still did a double take.”

Waltner told the station that it was “unacceptable” and “appalling” to discover the symbols on Sunday, which was Holocaust Remembrance Day.

{mosads}“It was horrific. It was frightening to see,” she said.

Waltner said hotel staff were sympathetic to their complaint and the family was moved to another Grand Beach Hotel location in Miami Beach.

“It’s also very hurtful because it relates to my family very deeply,” she said.

Hotel management declined to comment on the matter but Surfside Police Sgt. Marian Cruz told ABC News that police were investigating the incident.

Police are reviewing surveillance video and interviewing hotel staff. An officer impounded the mattress as evidence on Monday.

Waltner said she hopes the incident will not be “brushed under the rug.”

“It has to be handled,” she told the outlet. “It’s a delicate situation, and it can’t be ignored.”
