John Lewis greeted with standing ovation at Oscars
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) made a late appearance at the Academy Awards on Sunday night and received a standing ovation as he took the stage.
Lewis was present at the annual awards ceremony to introduce the film “Green Book,” which was nominated for Best Picture.
{mosads}”I can bear witness that the portrait of that time and place in our history is very real. It is seared in my memory,” Lewis, a civil rights activist, said about the film.
“Green Book” depicts famous African-American jazz pianist Don Shirley as he travels the South in the early 1960s with a white driver.
“Our nation bears the scars of that time, as do I,” Lewis said to applause, referring to the scars he has from his involvement with the Selma Marches.
