ICE: Woman who allegedly attacked man wearing MAGA hat was in the country unlawfully
A woman who allegedly attacked a man wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in Massachusetts is reportedly facing deportation.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Tuesday that Rosiane Santos is in the U.S. illegally and that she had been taken into its custody, according to CBS Boston.
The announcement comes weeks after video surfaced of Santos getting into a confrontation with a man, Bryton Turner, as he was eating at a Mexican restaurant.
Turner shared a video on Facebook showing Santos swiping his red “MAGA” hat off his head and calling him stupid. The footage had been viewed about 146,000 times as of Tuesday evening.
Police in Falmouth, Mass., said that Santos allegedly confronted Turner verbally after the incident. She has been charged with disorderly conduct, according to CBS Boston.
Santos was taken into ICE custody on Tuesday and was later released. CBS Boston noted that she has been ordered to appear before an immigration judge for proceedings regarding her removal.
“Deportation officers with ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team arrested Rosiane Santos, an unlawfully present citizen of Brazil, today near Falmouth, Massachusetts,” ICE spokesman John Mohan told CBS Boston.
Turner told CBS Boston that he didn’t really “understand why people can’t just express themselves anymore, everybody has to get mad.”
The red hat flashing Trump’s signature slogan has fueled similar incidents in recent years. A San Antonio man was arrested in July 2018 after video surfaced showing him harass a teenager wearing the hat.
