Meghan McCain on Thursday urged those bothered by President Trump’s most recent attacks against her father to contribute to a charity dedicated to veterans’ issues.
McCain said on ABC’s “The View,” where she is a co-host, that it’s been “extremely emotionally exhausting” to deal with Trump’s latest criticisms of her father, the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who died of brain cancer last August.
Trump has criticized the former senator multiple times in recent days, most recently lamenting that he was not properly thanked for approving the late senator’s funeral services.
{mosads}”I don’t expect decency and compassion from the Trump family,” Meghan McCain said Thursday. “I do want to thank the American public for all the decency and compassion they have given us.”
“Do not feel sorry for my family,” she added.
She said the president targeting her family reminded her of Trump’s criticisms of Khizr Khan, the father of a fallen soldier who took aim at the president during the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
McCain said she hoped viewers would “take this awful moment and turn it into something positive” and encouraged them to support Freedom Team, a subset of Achilles International that offers resources to wounded veterans.
Trump on Wednesday unleashed his latest criticism of John McCain, whom he long feuded with before McCain’s death, and has gone after the late senator multiple times this week.
The president said he dislikes McCain because of his connection to a dossier of claims about the president and Russia as well as his vote against a Republican effort to repeal ObamaCare and his support for the Iraq War.
A number of Republican lawmakers came to McCain’s defense on Wednesday, both before and after Trump’s remarks about McCain’s funeral.
