Monica Lewinksy weighed in Wednesday on the release of Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the special counsel investigation, drawing comparisons between the probe and the one launched by Republicans during former President Clinton’s tenure in the 1990s.
In a tweet, Lewinsky ridiculed the process by which Barr’s summary was released to the public, comparing the end of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation to a hypothetical scenario where independent counsel Ken Starr’s report was released only to Janet Reno, Clinton’s attorney general.
{mosads}Lewinsky, now an anti-bullying activist, was involved in an affair with Clinton during her time as a young White House intern that would later fuel GOP accusations of dishonesty aimed at Clinton, leading to his eventual impeachment.
Democrats and critics of the White House reacted with concern following Sunday’s release of Barr’s report summarizing the years-long Mueller investigation, raising questions as to whether Trump’s newly confirmed attorney general had in some way altered the contents of Mueller’s conclusion on Russia’s election interference and Trump’s campaign.
Officials at the Justice Department told Reuters this week that Barr aims to have a public version of Mueller’s report released within “weeks, not months.”
Lewinsky re-entered headlines earlier this year when it was reported that Trump, a frequent adversary of the Clintons, brought up the affair during multiple White House tours with guests.
