Burger King to test out vegan ‘Impossible’ burgers
Burger King is set to roll out “Impossible” vegan burgers in test markets to discover if its Whopper-loving clientele will be able to notice a difference in flavor in the plant-based patties.
The national burger chain known for its charbroiled beef patties announced on Monday its plan to test out the vegan option, according to CNN.
The “Impossible” Whoppers will be made with plant-based burgers supplied from Impossible Foods and will be available at 59 Burger King locations in or near St. Louis.
{mosads}If initial sales and reaction in St. Louis are positive, the chain will roll out the product nationwide.
Chris Finazzo, president of Burger King North America, told CNN the company hopes to “give somebody who wants to eat a burger every day, but doesn’t necessarily want to eat beef everyday, permission to come into the restaurants more frequently.”
Burger King will become the first fast-food chain to have a plant-based burger on its menu.
“There’s a lot of interest in plant-based burgers,” Finazzo said.
As part of the promotional campaign for the meatless burger patty, Burger King attempted to trick customers who thought they were eating a traditional beef Whopper.
“Impossible” burgers not made specifically for Burger King can already be found at thousands of restaurants across the country, but this is the company’s first foray into fast food and production on this scale.
Whoppers made with plant-based ingredients will cost customers roughly a dollar more than their traditional counterparts, offsetting the cost of the “Impossible” protein.
