George H.W. Bush’s service dog honors former president on Memorial Day

The Instagram account of former President George H.W. Bush’s former service dog, Sully, posted a photo paying tribute to his “best friend” on Memorial Day.

“Always thinking of my best friend & the bravest military in the world who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our country for our freedoms,” the dog’s Instagram read along with a quote from his former owner.

Sully, a highly trained service dog who worked with the former president starting in the summer of 2018, is named after famed pilot and Air Force veteran Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.

The yellow Labrador made headlines and captured hearts in December after accompanying Bush’s casket as it was flown to Washington, D.C., for memorial services.

He was appointed in February to the rank of hospital corpsman second class with the U.S. Navy.

The pooch joined other service dogs who work with veterans to reduce stress and increase well-being among patients at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
