US climber dies on Mount Everest, pushing death toll to 11

A climber from Colorado died after reaching the summit of Mount Everest, The Associated Press reported on Monday, citing the victim’s brother.

The climber, a 62-year-old attorney from Boulder named Christopher Kulish, died at a camp during his descent, Mark Kulish told the news service, adding that his brother’s cause of death is unknown.

{mosads}“He passed away doing what he loved, after returning to the next camp below the peak,” Mark Kulish said, according to the AP.

Eleven people have now died during the current climbing season on Mount Everest, making it one of the deadliest in years.

Veteran climbers blame the deaths on the number of climbers, particularly inexperienced ones, on the mountain, according to The New York Times.

Experienced mountaineers told the newspaper the Nepalese government has issued more permits than the mountain can handle.

Sherpas and climbers said some of the deaths were caused by climbers being held up in lines on the last 1,000 feet of the ascent with no access to their oxygen supply, according to the Times.
