Ocasio-Cortez mocks plans for ‘Straight Pride Parade’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday mocked a “Straight Pride Parade” that is reportedly being organized in Boston as a response to Pride Month.

“Will ‘Straight Pride’ be a Freaky Friday type situation where all of our history books, movies, stories, media, news, etc feature mostly LGBTQ+ people & perspectives?” Ocasio-Cortez asked on Twitter.

“Will people have to come out as straight? What would folks march in? Socks w/ sandals on? Dad jeans?” she continued.{mosads}

Reports of a possible “Straight Pride Parade” were mocked widely on social media.

The parade is being organized by three men, according to The Washington Post, who have designated actor Brad Pitt as their mascot and designed a flag for the event — a blue and pink logo with male and female signs intertwined. The men are reportedly part of a group called Super Happy Fun America.

The parade is scheduled tentatively for Aug. 31, according to a Facebook post from event organizer Mark Sahady. He wrote that the city, one of the most gay-friendly in the nation, is “now working with us on the parade,” and it will take the same route as the official Pride parade.

The event was reportedly organized as a response to Boston officials denying a request to fly the “straight pride” flag at Boston’s City Hall, CBS News reported.

John Hugo, one of the event organizers, told The Washington Post, “We want tolerance, and we want tolerance for everybody — not just the LGBTQ community.”

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh (D) released a statement in support of the city’s LGBT community in response to the news of the parade, USA Today reported.

“Every year, Boston hosts our annual Pride Week, where our city comes together to celebrate the diversity, strength and acceptance of our LGBTQ community,” Walsh said.

“This is a special week that represents Boston’s values of love and inclusion, which are unwavering. I encourage everyone to join us in celebration this Saturday for the Pride Parade and in the fight for progress and equality for all.”
