Former President Jimmy Carter offered rare praise for President Trump while teaching Sunday school at a church in his home state of Georgia.
Speaking at Maranatha Baptist Church in his hometown of Plains, Ga., Carter praised Trump’s response to the reported downing of a U.S. drone over international waters by Tehran, according to NPR.
{mosads}”I agree with President Trump on his decision not to take military action against Iran,” he said. “I had a lot of problems with Iran when I was in office.”
Tensions with Iran have escalated in recent weeks. Last week, Trump was reportedly ready to launch a retaliatory strike on Iran in response to the downing of the drone. He ultimately decided to pull back on the strike, saying he reassessed after hearing it could kill 150 people.
Carter on Sunday reportedly presented his image of what a Christian nation is supposed to be. His lesson Sunday was just the second since breaking his hip last month, NPR noted.
“We’re supposed to be a ‘Christian’ nation are we not? But we are known throughout the world as the most warlike country on Earth,” Carter said, according to the network. “And I would say almost all the wars in which we’ve been involved, have been unnecessary.”
Carter has been teaching at the Baptist church since leaving the Oval Office.
