US women’s soccer star Alex Morgan says verdict on Trump White House invite will be team decision
U.S. soccer star Alex Morgan has said the team will likely decide together whether to accept President Trump’s invitation to the White House but added that the discussion would not happen until after the World Cup final Sunday against the Netherlands.
“I think we will make that decision after we finish Sunday’s game,” Morgan said according to Reuters, before seeming to insinuate the team would not visit the White House.
“I think there has been a lot of talk, prematurely, about the White House and about Trump but first we have to do business and then I think you guys know the answer to the question anyways,” she added.
{mosads}Morgan’s statement follows a comment by teammate Megan Rapinoe, who said she would not attend a White House event.
Morgan added that she also does not think it’s likely that some team members will decide to go while others don’t.
“I can’t say 100 percent, but this team is very close and we have always made decisions together so I can’t really see us deciding to part in that way but at the same time if someone feels strongly then who are we to tell them to do or not do something,” she said.
A video went viral last week in which Rapinoe said she is “not going to the f—ing White House” if her team wins the World Cup.
Trump responded by tweeting that he is a “big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer,” but added that “Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!”
The team will take on the Netherlands in the Sunday women’s World Cup final. The U.S. women are attempting to win their second consecutive World Cup.
