Police department allows people to pay parking tickets with animal shelter donations

An Indiana police department says a campaign allowing people to pay off their parking tickets by donating to a local animal shelter was a success.

The Muncie Police Department said in a Facebook post that its campaign, which ran from July 15 to July 19, prompted donations of cat food, litter, beds and other supplies.

“This room was almost empty before we started! Most of the folks that donated didn’t even have parking tickets,” the department wrote.

{mosads}The department said earlier this month that anyone with a parking ticket could pay it off by donating the amount of their fine to Muncie Animal Care & Services, which cares for more than 350 cats and kittens, Fox35 reports. 

“The Muncie ACS is overrun with cats and kittens,” the department tweeted on July 15. “We want to help! 

Pay your parking tickets in cat food!

Until Friday the 19th at 4 PM we are allowing folks to pay their parking tickets in cat food, kitten food, or kitty litter! Bring a donation in the amount of your ticket. The @MuncieACS is overrun with cats and kittens. We want to help! pic.twitter.com/mtwYzLdlCs

Other cities have launched similar efforts to help organizations in need, with Las Vegas voting last month to allow drivers to pay their parking tickets with school supply donations.
