Officials find Florida man’s skeletal remains in pond after Google Earth shows car underwater

The skeletal remains of a man who was missing for more than 20 years were reportedly discovered in a pond last month after a Google Earth user saw a car underwater.

William Earl Moldt disappeared 22 years ago. The 40-year-old was last seen leaving a nightclub on Nov. 7, 1997, and had called his girlfriend to tell her he was on his way home, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Last month, Barry Fay — who lives in Wellington, Fla. — said his neighbor’s ex-husband had used Google Earth and told him he’d seen a car at the bottom of the pond behind his house.

{mosads}Fay, 50, then called a neighbor with a drone, which confirmed the Google Earth sighting, according to the Sun-Sentinel. The Google Earth satellite image reportedly shows a car resting on its side at a ledge where the pond ends in the community, which was said to be under construction when Moldt disappeared.

Fay notified the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 28, and officials lifted the car from the pond in the Grand Isles development and found Moldt’s remains, the Sun-Sentinel reports.

Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the remains belonged to Moldt.
