Suspect arrested in killings of 9 Mormon family members

Authorities said a suspect has been arrested in the killing of nine Mormon family members in Mexico, CNN reported Wednesday.

The ministerial Agency for Criminal Investigations (AMIC) announced in a Facebook post that the suspect had been detained in the hills in the state of Sonora, according to the news network. The suspect was reportedly found with two gagged hostages, several rifles and a large collection of ammunition.

{mosads}Three women, four small children and two infants from a fundamentalist sect of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were killed in an ambush on Monday. Eight children survived the attack.

Observers have speculated that the attackers were part of a drug cartel and the victims were mistaken for rivals. 

“We are waiting for some more intelligence in order to issue an official statement,” the attorney general for the state Chihuahua, Cesar Peniche Espejel, told Mexico’s Imagen Radio, CNN reported.
