Ex-Watergate prosecutor says Trump’s actions are ‘far worse’ than Nixon’s

Former assistant Watergate special prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks believes President Trump’s actions are “far worse” than those of former President Nixon, she wrote in a Chicago Tribune letter to the editor

“President Trump’s actions are far worse than those of President Richard Nixon. If Congress fails to act, the current president and all future incumbents will be emboldened to act as though they are above the law because he and they will be,” Wine-Banks wrote in the letter published Tuesday.

She also argued in favor of impeachment, writing, “The evidence publicly available establishes impeachable offenses beyond a reasonable doubt and leaves no alternative but for Congress to act.”

Wine-Banks’s letter came in response to a Tribune op-ed arguing that Trump should be censured rather than impeached.

She asked, “If Trump’s conduct is not grounds for using impeachment, what would be?”

The House has launched an impeachment probe into Trump, which has included two weeks of public testimony, over his dealings with Ukraine.

Democrats have accused Trump of bribing and extorting Ukraine into conducting investigations that would help him politically. Trump has denied wrongdoing.

Nixon resigned in 1974 before the House voted on articles of impeachment.
