Teen activist Greta Thunberg sails into Lisbon for climate talks

Sixteen-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg on Tuesday arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, after a three-week sailing voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Swedish teen sailed to Portugal’s capital to attend a United Nations climate change conference in Madrid, The Associated Press reports.

She sailed from the United States on a white, renewable-energy yacht with an Australian family, according to the AP. The yacht, named La Vagabonde, reportedly uses solar panels and hydro-generators to create a small to nonexistent carbon footprint when its sails are up.

Thunberg, who does not travel by air due to the associated carbon emissions, has quickly become an international sensation and has organized a series of strikes to call for action on the issue of climate change.

She recently traveled from the United Kingdom to New York City on an emissions-free sailboat to attend the United Nations Climate Action Summit in August.

According to the U.N., a key objective of the Madrid conference — which takes place through Dec. 13 — is to “raise overall ambition” for combating climate change “by completing several key aspects with respect to the full operationalization of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.”

The Trump administration last month began to formally withdraw from the Obama-era climate pact after years of criticism from President Trump, who vowed to leave it while still a candidate in 2016.
