Conservatives slam ABC for refusing ads during White House program

Conservatives are criticizing ABC for turning away their efforts to buy advertising air time during ABC’s White House program next week.

One group, Conservative for Patients Rights, said Wednesday that it was told it could not purchase air time when he inquired about the price of a sixty second advertisement. The group is now criticizing the network for not allowing an alternative viewpoint, even in the form of a paid advertisement.

“It is unfortunate and unusual that ABC is refusing to accept paid advertising that would present an alternative viewpoint for the White House health care event,” Rick Scott, the chairman of the group, said in a statement. “The American people deserve a healthy, robust debate on this issue and ABC’s decision, as of now, to exclude even paid advertisements that present an alternative view does a disservice to the public.”

ABC, however, said the criticism is unfounded and that the network always turns away advocacy advertisements.

“The ABC television network has a long standing policy that we do not accept advocacy advertising,” said Emily Lenzner, a spokeswoman for the network.

Conservatives sharply criticized ABC earlier this week for the one-hour program, saying it allows the Obama administration an unmediated platform to control the healthcare debate.

It is worth noting that the Federal Election Commission recently found no wrongdoing after similar allegations against the New York Times and other media companies that were made during the presidential campaign.
